The reasons for this have some ugly racial and nationalistic undertones. Put simply the rugby team has a higher proportion of white players. Even before mass Arab/African immigration French football was largely the preserve of Polish, Italian and Spanish immigrants, hence Kopa, Platini, Amoros and Fernandez among others.
